The Rotary Club of Stennis Space Center is proud to announce the opening of the application period for the Ken and Susan Cooper Memorial Scholarship. The Cooper Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is provided on a competitive basis to graduating high school seniors residing in either Mississippi or Louisiana and planning to continue onto college seeking a degree in Oceanography, Hydrography, or related field.
As a Charter Member and Inaugural President of the Stennis Rotary Club, Ken Cooper left a legacy that has spread far beyond south Mississippi and Louisiana. His leadership and guidance helped the Club to grow into a viable entity that is providing hope and assistance to numerous people within the southeastern United States. It is in Ken Cooper’s honor that the Club established this undergraduate scholarship to be awarded to a worthy high school graduating senior. Ken’s wife, Susan, actively supported this effort and was present when the first scholarship was awarded in 2008. Later that same year, Susan passed away. It was her wish that memorials be made to this scholarship, and the Club elected to rename the scholarship to honor them both.
To apply for the scholarship, students will be required to write a single-page essay on themselves, their academic achievements, service projects within their community in which they participated, and service projects they might pursue in college. In addition, since Ken was a Hydrographer by profession, the scholarship will give precedence to students planning careers in Hydrography, the Marine Sciences, or a related field. Students will also have to show evidence of service to their local community, which reflects Ken’s commitment to Rotary as an avenue of service. Applications and essays are due April 1, 2011 and can be found on the Rotary Club of Stennis website.
